Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations Council (ECSOC)

ECSOC is a statutory organization established under the Organizations of Civil Societies Proclamation No. 1113/2019 in March 2019. ECSOC is the apex body legally representing over 4,000 civil society organizations, consortia, and associations.

The Council operates as a wholly independent institution with a mandate to represent and coordinate the CSO sector in Ethiopia.

The Council is an important catalyst for establishing and maintaining an enabling environment for the inclusive participation and operation of non-state actors, allowing them to engage in any lawful activity, including democracy, human rights, elections, peacebuilding, etc.

Experts train participants from local CSOs in Addis Ababa and Oromia on Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA).

The session aims to enhance CSOs' capacity to promote and protect human rights by integrating a human rights-based approach in their programming and activities. By providing a solid understanding of human rights principles and practices, the training ensures that CSOs can effectively advocate for the rights of marginalized communities, monitor human rights violations, and contribute to a more just and equitable society.

Similarly, representatives of local CSOs operating in the Oromia Region attended a training session on Human Rights-Based Approach.

The sessions are part of a series of trainings that are part of the project that the Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations Council (ECSOC), initiated in partnership with Freedom House entitled “Enhancing the Contribution of the Civil Society Sector towards Human Rights Protection in Ethiopia.”

This initiative includes a Training of Trainers-ToT program aimed at building the capacity of CSOs to effectively adopt HRBA, advocate for equality, engage stakeholders, and advance sustainable development and human rights protection.
