About the Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations Council (ECSOC)

The Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations Council (ECSOC) is an independent apex body legally representing the civil society sector, which consists of organizations, consortia, associations, forums, and networks. ECSOC was established on December 31, 2020, by the 300 General Assembly members that consisted of CSO representatives and are the founders of the Council.

The Council was formed as per Article 85 of the Civil Society Organizations’ Proclamation 1113/2019, which stipulates that the establishment of a Council shall be governed by the full participation of “all” CSOs in Ethiopia and, further, that the Council shall “represent and coordinate the civil society sector”. This implies that ECSOC represents all CSOs in Ethiopia.

The peace instruments: National Dialogue (ND), Transitional Justice (TJ) as well as Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) has a greatest role on the lasting peace in Ethiopia by aiming this the consultative discussion held on sensitize the participants on applying an interconnected approach of the peacebuilding instruments. The participants have agreed to harness the three instruments for peacebuilding in an integrated approach and to address the root causes of conflict to pave the way for a peaceful, secure, and just future.

In her welcoming remarks Acting Executive Director of ECSOC, Hana Woldegebrial said: "The Council, along with its members & partners will continue to ensure that such platforms result in achieving concrete progress," she stated that plans are underway to facilitate a tripartite consultation where leading experts in ND, TJ, and DDR will get together to map out the way forward in peacebuilding an integrated manner.

Addressing the participants at the workshop, National Dialogue Commissioner, Yonas Adaye (Ph.D) emphasized that the Commission is working tirelessly to ensure inclusivity in the process which in the long run will contribute to achieving sustainable peace in the country.
